Now we are officially back into life in Calgary. We are both working, Kevin for the school and me at a wonderful store called La Vie En Rose. Classes start on Friday, and we're already busy with all our involvements at what is now called Amrose University College.

What we're up to

So we're busy packing and cleaning and have to be out of our place by Sunday! Our OnSite is officially over then, and we'll be traveling bums until we get a place in Calgary for August 1st. So if you don't hear from us in awhile, that will be why! On Tuesday we're going to Rome, Italy and then we'll visit Athens, Greece, and then we're heading to Nice, Southern France (where we'll get to hang out with Maggie!! YAY), and finally, we'll spend a few days in Barcelona, Spain before coming back here to Basel on July 9th! We're joining some church friends to a concert in Munich July 10th, and then we'll have a few days for some final things and last good-byes before we fly into Vancouver July 17th. I'm stoked and sad at the same time.
Then we'll be visiting all (or most) of you! Our awesome friends and family in various areas of Canada! I'll attach some pictures from some of the things from our lives in the past month, and this might be our last blog in a very long time!

YAY! Berlin

So, sadly, we went on our LAST EVER ski/snowboard trip for the season, with an adult camp from the church a couple of weeks ago. It was on the Swiss/France border just past Geneve. It was so warm, the snow started to get really sticky - great runs, but I think it was the weirdest conditions I've ever experienced. If you pick up too much speed, the stickiness of it all grabs your board, so you go head over foot! (Kev can attest to this!) And I got to ride a "je-ski" or something, which is just a seat on a little ski! You sit on the seat, legs streight out, and grab the seat with your hands. I know it sounds super akward, but once you get the hang of it, its soooooo fun! Turns out I'm pro. :)

Upon return, we have been at G5 basically non-stop as we have been undergoing painting projects and helping with the new patio that is going in at our Restaurant. We had another Youth Retreat Vision weekend over Easter, and this past weekend had some very special Zurich guests (those of you that might know her, Andrea Knabenhans, my friend through Tawny Treen) stay with us for some leadership Seminars our church hosted. SO GREAT TO SEE HER!! She's one of those people that is just incredibly encouraging to be around. Not to mention, I thoroughly enjoyed getting an ear-full of Swiss German!

(On a side note - though they all seem to be able to converse with me, the Germans seem to think I speak Swiss German, and the Swiss think I'm speaking high German. So, as it turns out, I've managed to make up my own language. How emberessing.)

The seminars that I was able to attend this weekend were an inspiration to me about what I want to do with my life, and definately worth being part of! We also hosted another "Big Games" on Saturday, so all in all, I'm spent.

And our "internship" is officially over in mid June. That means we have exactly 2 months left here. So as our time is "winding down", a general sense of panick seems to have crept in. So much to do, so little time!! On our side, we are realizing that after being in Germany for 7 months, we haven't actually seen much of the country at all, other than our own little corner of it. Hence, we are going to Berlin on Thursday night! Through connections here, we get to stay in a fully furnished appartment there for as long as we want for free! (which will actually be until next Wednsday morning) And we're pretty excited to just be tourists for awhile.

On the side of a few others, we have suddenly been recieving invitations from all of the elders, leaders and so forth here to meet, or go out, or have dinner, etc. Its been neat, but a little strange because somehow along with April fools day came a new-found popularity! And we're just hoping the two aren't related...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ericksongermany.blogspot.com/2007/04/in-nut-shell-geneve-zurich-berlin_16.html' title='In a Nut Shell - Geneve, Zurich, & Recently, there is a section where I've noticed a little sign with a 50 zone and a picture of a frog. I wondered about this, considering that it might be some kind of frog crossing, hence we slow to 50 so as not to kill the frogs, but I decided that was rediculous, and so I concluded it must be a farming thing and I carried on my merry way.
Shortly after the sign went up, I noticed people in the fields on either side of that rode working with boots and gloves and buckets. I figured that was their version of planting, or something.
Shortly after that, I noticed little green fences up on either side of the road, I assumed it had something to do with protecting the seed or whatever (just call me the brilliant farmer!).
Tonight, the real mystery was solved!!
Every year, frogs migrate up that hill and across the road to lay their eggs. I guess in past years there have been so many dead frogs on the roads that it becomes dangerous to drive due to slipperiness. So they put up little frog fences so the frogs can't cross the roads, lowered the speed limit in case some do get past the fence - and the "farmers" with their buckets -
yeah, naturally, those would be the frog collectors who after filling their buckets, carry the frogs safely across the road to set them free.

GERMANY IS SO WIERD!!!!

Winterfreizeit & Morgenstreich

5 or so years ago when I first took that 3 hour train ride from Luzern to visit my best friend Susie in St. Gallen, I had no idea whether or not I would ever be back. I certainly never imagined that at 23, I would spend a week there in a house snowboarding of all things (which 5 years ago I couldn't do) with my husband (who then I hadn't met) and 110 crazies (who were then still in diapers!) from our German Youth Group (where I never thought I'd live)!

I can only say that life can sure take some unexpected and pleasantly surprising turns!!

We stayed in Flums, Switzerland. I shared a room with 12 girls ages 14-16 and I even got to lead one of the morning devotions for our leadership team (I guess about 25 of us). Unfortunately, my camera kinda kicked the bucket a few months ago, so the only proof I currently have of our being there is a picture of a massive bruise (or "blue fleck" as the Germans call it - even if its not blue, so I don't get it) that I proudly wear on my right hip. But remind me when we get back in 5 months, and I'll show you the video! (our friend Tim did a pro one, like we do at CBC for Legacy)
I did, however, borrow a camera for this morning - this stupid blog is only letting me attach this one picture, but at least now you can see some the crazies we're dealing with!!! (Just kidding, these particular crazies are actually Swiss)This morning we got up at 2 am and headed out with our friends Rachel & John Wayne to see the annual "Morgen Streich" something-or-other in Basel. Its a parade at the end of Fasnacht/February where they turn off all the city lights between 4-6 am, dress up crazy, play flute-thingers & bang on drums with wierd lanterns on their heads & stuff - since its hard to explain, I'll just quote Kevin on our way home in the wee hours "That is the wierdest thing I've ever seen." And there is just no other way to describe it.But yes, there are certainly these strange habits in Germany, too. In fact, only a few short hours before this visit to Basel, I went for a drive with my Sunday night Small Group to see the "fires". Every village has a huge bonfire where they burn all the Christmas trees to chase away the Winter Spirit while the kids launch fire disks into the night (cool to watch-maybe not so safe, seeing as we saw one burning in the middle of the street later, and had to swerve to miss it). Its awesome though, to look around at night and see the different bonfires on the hills and in the valleys from all the surrounding villages. It reminded me of something from Lord of the Rings. Kevin and I were lamenting at how when you put a group of people in one place for too long, these odd 'traditions' emerge. Note that the only stuff like this that goes on in Canada are from groups of people that have been there the longest - dressing up, bonfires, wierd music - its really along the same vein. And lots of it comes from roots in dark spiritual kind of stuff, too.
Anyhoo, I guess I'll head to bed and attach more pictures whenever this blog decides to get with the program. Gut Nacht!

Cold & Alone

So I got up early this morning to head over to G5, as per usual for a Saturday. I was brushing the fresh snow (which we FINALLY got this week!!) off of our little red car, Dixie, and feeling pretty sorry for myself. It was early, and I don't like mornings. It was cold, and my bed had been so warm. It was dark, and I hate dark. It's Saturday, and I'm pretty sure there's a law somewhere that says we should all get Saturdays off. AND I'm in Germany, while everyone that loves me is in Canada (or Texas)!
Anyhoo, as I was driving alone down the road, shivering and silently complaining as per the usual early morning attitude, I was suddenly struck with the thought of what I was wearing at that moment. Hear me out:
I got the jeans in Winnipeg, my mom and Reuben helped me pick 'em out. Linda and Sally bought me the belt in Portage a few years ago - we all got matching ones. The shirt used to be Steph Maygaurd's - my roomate in Calgary. The big ol' cork earings were a gift from Maggie, my awesome German friend. Even the bag I was carrying, I got in Calgary because it reminded me of one that Becky has! And it hit me - these things don't match!
That, and the fact that from head to foot, everything I had with me at that moment reminded me of someone I love incredibly lots.
So my mood did a 180, and I find myself thinking that the gently falling snow is rediculously beautiful, and it couldn't be a better day!

thoughts from Mindy

The theme of my heart for December became "Go Tell it on The Mountain."
The first time this year that I heard this famous carol was Dec 9th performed at our Danny Plett Christmas Concert. I thought, "if only we did this! In celebration of the birth of our Saviour, we should be shouting it from the mountain!" Being so filled with the joy that I've personally recieved as a result of knowing Jesus Christ, that Christmas Concert ended up being one of the best parties that I've ever been to!
Then on Dec. 14th we were visiting Zurich with Kevin's parents, and near one of the Christmas Markets we saw a "singing Christmas tree". That's when a bunch of people dressed in green climb into what looks like a giant Christmas tree so that they look like part of the tree themselves and then sing carols. An ingenious idea, really.
On this particular day, it was a group of 10 yr. olds singing, and after singing alot of really cute Swiss German Christmas songs, they ended with "Go Tell it on the Mountain" in English with their thick Swiss accents. Having just visited the Matterhorn the day before, and now listening to these Swiss children proclaiming that "Jesus Christ is born!" I couldn't help it, I was moved to tears. I wondered if they actually know Jesus Christ? I sure hope so.
Being in the mountains of Switzerland, I thought not just of "shouting it from the mountain tops" but I thought of all the villages and houses we had seen scattered in the mountains, knowing that there are people living on those mountains in need of the good news. And I felt desperate to "Go tell it on the mountain". To bring Hope and a Reason to those that have none.
These thoughts have lingered with me into this New Year, and have felt so urgent as I have visited with some of my dearest Swiss friends who have been in desperate need of my Lord, but are not ready to meet Him yet . . .
Those of you that are in a habit of praying, please pray for my Swiss friends. They need to find God. They need Strength to carry on, and Hope that life is worth living.

5 Countries in 10 Days

Mom and Dad Erickson arrived on Dec. 8th, and we have been able to spend much of our Christmas holidays traveling with them! We've spent time in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Germany maybe doesn't count cuz we live there. Though we did tour the Neuschwanstein ("New Swan Stone" - the castle Walt Disney based his Fairy Tail castles on). Its only about 150 years old, built by King Ludwig II who never married, went crazy and commited suicide at the age of 40 before the castle was even finished (how's that for romantic?).

France is 10 minutes from our house, as is Switzerland, so maybe they don't count, either. Though we did go see the Matterhorn in southern Switzerland, and a singing Christmas tree in Zurich, as well enjoyed some great steak yesterday in France at the "Foot of the Lion"! It was our first time in Italy, but we only really stopped there for lunch!

So that leaves us with Austria, where we stayed in the Hotel Bristol which is about 300 years old, and in the heart of Mozart's stomping grounds. Our window view looked right into what used to be his front door!! We were even able to take in a classical concert. Actually, we even did a "Sound of Music" tour, which was a great way to see the area though I sure won't mind if I never hear, "The Hills are Alive...." again. Here I am posing with some guy who had a guest appearance in the movie... which I have yet see.

Before the traveling began we did our first mini Beggars Feast, which went well and we learned some things for next time. Between travels we had some Small Group Christmas parties that were great, Emma Emgard paid us a fantastic but short-lived visit, and we helped out with some other odds and ends at the church.

We spent Christmas Eve with Phil & Tammy Peters and the family enjoying a traditional cheese fondue which was really special, and then Christmas day was just the four of us again. Mom went all out with the whole turkey dinner thing, and we spent a couple of relaxing days here at home where we played cards & games and I hung out in my p.j.s. Is there any other way to spend Christmas? But we still don't have any snow....

We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

News up the Wazoo!

After a weekend away, I came home to.... A letter from DARBY HALL!! And lots of other dear friends! Thanks guys! We sure felt loved!
That weekend away was for my little Stephanie Estermann's 7th birthday on Saturday, Nov. 25th. This is her blowing out her candles, with Patrick in the background. I was pretty stoked to get 3 whole days with them in Luzern! I got to see some close friends that I haven't seen in up to 4 and 1/2 years! This picture is with my good friend Roger Blattler who is going to be a father shortly after New Years! Man, we're all getting so old!
Unexpectadly, I also got to enjoy Stephanie's Ballet Recital, and Michael was nice enough to fly me all over Switzerland as he was training another pilot! Very cool. Rumor has it, this house is where Shania Twain lives!

Then, after a crazy & awesome weekend, I returned home (after dinging up the car and getting lost in downtown Basel - ahhhh!) to find out that my brother is also gonna be a father!!!! Nate & Dara are due in June! I can't believe it! Then (after an eventful weekend of lengthy German seminars on"Spiritual Gifts") Kev and I awoke to an early morning phone call from a certain Connie & Matt letting us know they're engaged!!!! Yay! Any more good news and I might just explode!

The Swiss Alps

This last weekend I went with the ten other guys in my small group to a chalet up in the Swiss Alps! We climbed two mountains in the two days, and saw so many random shacks spread out all over the place. Don't ask me what they were for, most looked impossible to even get to! And of all the things to see in the Swiss Alps, we saw this lady walking a Camel down the road! Anyway, that was a great time, and very beautiful.
Then last night we went to the restaurant of our church and they had a guest Country band! That was only the coolest thing ever, cuz they sang popular cover songs which nobody here even knew, but I loved it. Germans are funny singing country, it seemed more than a little out of place. Everyone was wearing Gangster hats and Fishing hats, and seemed to think that made them cowboys. And apparently this band has won some awards for their music, but we thought that couldn't be too tough to do, because they are probably the only country band in Germany! Anyway this last week has been a lot of fun.

Bird in Your Ear

So I've realized recently that since we've been here, all we've gotten in the mail (with the exception of one imPACt paper from Portage Alliance Church) has been bills, junk flyers, and more bills. Some friends have been asking what they can do for us, beyond specific prayer requests, etc. Well, allow me to announce once and for all that we LOVE mail!! Packages are especially nice, but any reminder that somewhere, someone loves us will do! Danke Schoen!!

Driving

So I have some exciting news! Two things first I got to play in a worship band which was a lot of fun also challenging, because everything happens in German so following along is a little difficult, but fun.
The second piece of news is I went on one of the autobahns a couple days again with a BMW! If you didn't know a lot of the autobahns here in Germany do not have speed limits. Well needless to say I had fun. The BMW was one of the smallest they make, but it will still do 190km/h. Anyway both of those things happened on the same day, so that was a pretty good day!

ohne dich ist alles doof!

(Starting from my left is Ruth, Rachel, Denise & Simone.)

I'm just gonna vent a little bit of excitement for awhile, okay?

So we live in this really great little house, and when we came we only had two suitcases of clothes and our snowboards. Our entire house now has everything we need to live, plus more, and it was all free!! (I mean, we pay rent, but not alot) We are now getting German lessons from the pastor's wife (ha, ha! She's even Swiss!!), who wants us to just help clean their place or babysit their 2 and 4 year old as payment!! Fantastic! Then, because we are also helping in the restaurant of the church, we were told that we could eat there for free! Not that we want to abuse that and eat there all the time, but we're there alot and it helps so much! We were lent/given a car, washer & dryer, vaccuum cleaner, a cell phone, a TV, a DVD player, everything that we need and even don't need! When I stop to add it all up, it is just so amazing how the Lord takes care of you, above and beyond what you ever could have expected! Es ist einfach unglaublich!! Its definately faith-building, not to mention exciting! "Thanks" for those of you who have been praying for us! Like driving one hour to Zurich and hanging out there for the day, seeing the sights and having a good time down by the river with all the old buildings and churches.
One of the best parts is that I got to drive through the longest tunnel I have ever been in, it was 4km long, a good time if I do say so myself.
Also I can say "nein danke" (no thank you) without an accent! At the end of February and middle of March there are three different week long camps that the church puts on. We will be going along on these camps to help out and participate in them. This is not the difficult part, the difficult part is that they are ski/snowboard camps, so I have to snowboard for three weeks this winter! I do not know how I will ever handle this! I guess I will just have to bear down and do it!
Other then that news everything else here is going well, we are getting busier with meetings, planning events and such. We have started our German lessons and now people speak to me in German and I still don't understand them. I guess I need more then 3 lessons to become fluent! Who would have thought!

This picture is of an ox on a spit downtown Lorrach. It was pretty cool (Mindy was quite disgusted).

Tonight I head to a small group with some guys from the church. It should be a good way to meet some new people and to perhaps learn more German. With that I leave you one of the words I can say though I don't know if I spell it correctly. Tschus! (pronounced choos)

P.S By the way, incase you didn't know, I am very sarcastic in the first paragraph!

Friends, Old and New

So we've been in Germany for six weeks today. And we haven't blogged... Hoofta - its been awhile.

Before anything else, let me just say that Linda Enns is getting married in 24 hours from right now. In Portage la Prairie... and I am in Kandern. WHAT AM I DOING HERE??? If ever there was a need for the "beem me up"technologies that are only fictional - now would be the time.

My memories not exactly great.... so I'll tell you where things are at now. My brother Reuben and 3 of his friends left yesterday morning. They were here for a week, cuz they've been traveling around Europe. We had a lot of fun with a bunch of crazies in the house - and because we're right on the borders of France and Switzerland we were able to take them to visit both, briefly. And we spent a day at Europapark which was one of the coolest things I've done recently. All 4 guys were sporting new tattoos, and they sure eat alot. Plus, they never stop talking!! Of course, that was mostly entertaining, and our house seems soooo quiet now. Kevin and I are both sick with colds too, parting gifts from the boys, I guess! Here they are.
Yep, I also got to visit "my" part of Switzerland. Oct 14 & 15 Kevin and I drove to Luzern and stayed with Elias (in picture) in Gunzwil. I can't even possibly describe how incredible it was to be back there and see some old friends. For those of you who know me well enough to know who these people are - I also saw Thomas (Luthi - in other picture), Zucku, Mario, Lukas, Isabelle, & family - as well as friends from my church, Nicole & Rahel. Of course there are so many that are living away from home now, and I am hoping to get to go back soon to see many more, and hopefully to have them visit us out here, too... but the crowning jewel of a surprise was when the Estermanns got back from Miami earlier than I'd known they would be. And I got to see Ursi, Michael and my not-so-little Patrick and Stephanie again!! Let me tell you, that was indescribable. Absolutely wonderful. Our visit was painfully short, cuz I was hosting and leading my first small group that night at home in Germany, and we had to get back. It went pretty well, by the way. And then that night after I'd gone to bed - I cried like never before. Actually, I think the last time I cried that hard was probably when I left in the first place. The one "bad" outcome of that visit is that it makes it harder for me to be here - as in, one hour away from them. I'm so close and yet so far, and sometimes I can't stand it. I don't know that there would be many people on earth who identify with exactly this sort of thing - maybe Sarah Duthie? But to have raised and loved children as if they were your own. And then to leave them. Its rediculously painful. And now to have seen them again - and realize how much they have grown and changed and that I wasn't even there to see it... anyway, I'm hoping to start making up for lost time this year.

You'll be seeing our newsletter any minute here, and hopefully that'll fill in some of the blanks. In the meantime, here are some pictures of some of the girls I have been getting closest to.
Ruth, who is in one of my small groups.
Today is her birthday!

Rachel, here with her fiancee, Andreas.

Simone is also in the small group, and that's Maggie in the middle.

from Portage to Princeton

So Kevin and I spent last week in Portage, and my bestest best friend Susie Marie Hiebert had a baby girl!! Born 7:15 am on Thursday, September 7th, her name is Taylor Jade. We just missed her, as we were off to the Winnipeg Airport while Vince, Susie & Taylor were in a Brandon hospital. These pictures of a very pregnant Susie were taken on Sunday, Sept 3rd - the day after her due date. The other beauty to my left is Linda Enns, she will be getting married to Steve Wiebe at the end of October and though I am very excited to be going to Germany, I am also brokenhearted for having to miss her Wedding (and still praying for a miracle to get there).

We spent one great night in Calgary saying good-bye to some of our dearest friends, they prayed over us, annointing us with oil, and overall made us feel very loved. Then we spent a couple of days in Kelowna where we enjoyed time with Jay, Rachel and baby Levi Erickson. We are now in Princeton, BC with Mom & Dad Erickson and as expected, our days here are filled with quading and John Wayne movies. The next time we post anything, I'm sure it will be from the land of the German.

Moving

Well we've moved! And let me tell you it is not as much fun as it sounds, because we still have to move again. We are now in Portage la Prairie, MB. visiting Mindy's family and friends. We moved out of our apartment at the end of August and then slept at friends places for awhile.
Moving out is something I do not enjoy, it's one thing to move out and go to another apartment or house it is another to have to seperate everything into pile that are going to Germany and going to Grande Prairie (brother) and going to Princeton (parents). This was not a fun task but it is done and we are glad. We are now relaxing and enjoying the next couple weeks before we leave on the 14th. We are here in portage until the 7th and then we fly to Calgary and drive to BC. Lots of traveling for us in the near future.

First blog ever!

So this is the first time I have ever written a blog or on a blog.
