Caution: Slow in Case of Frogs
On our daily drives between Kandern and Eimeldingen, the speed limit is normally 80. Recently, there is a section where I've noticed a little sign with a 50 zone and a picture of a frog. I wondered about this, considering that it might be some kind of frog crossing, hence we slow to 50 so as not to kill the frogs, but I decided that was rediculous, and so I concluded it must be a farming thing and I carried on my merry way.
Shortly after the sign went up, I noticed people in the fields on either side of that rode working with boots and gloves and buckets. I figured that was their version of planting, or something.
Shortly after that, I noticed little green fences up on either side of the road, I assumed it had something to do with protecting the seed or whatever (just call me the brilliant farmer!).
Tonight, the real mystery was solved!!
Every year, frogs migrate up that hill and across the road to lay their eggs. I guess in past years there have been so many dead frogs on the roads that it becomes dangerous to drive due to slipperiness. So they put up little frog fences so the frogs can't cross the roads, lowered the speed limit in case some do get past the fence - and the "farmers" with their buckets -
yeah, naturally, those would be the frog collectors who after filling their buckets, carry the frogs safely across the road to set them free.
GERMANY IS SO WIERD!!!!
